چکیده

The purpose of this study was to develop an approach to generate artificial computed tomography (CT) images with known deformation by learning the anatomy changes in a patient population for voxel-level validation of deformable image registration. Using a dataset of CT images representing anatomy changes during the course of radiation therapy, we selected a reference image and registered the remaining images to it, either directly or indirectly, using deformable registration. The resulting deformation vector fields (DVFs) represented the anatomy variations in that patient population. The mean deformation, computed from the DVFs, and the most prominent variations, which were captured using principal component analysis (PCA), composed an active shape model that could generate random known deformations with realistic anatomy changes based on those learned from the patient population. This approach was applied to a set of 12 head and neck patients who received intensity-modulated radiation therapy for validation. Artificial planning CT and daily CT images were generated to simulate a patient with known anatomy changes over the course of treatment and used to validate the deformable image registration between them. These artificial CT images potentially simulated the actual patients' anatomies and also showed realistic anatomy changes between different daily CT images. They were used to successfully validate deformable image registration applied to intrapatient deformation.

Evaluation of deformable image registration in HDR gynecological brachytherapy

Introduction: In brachytherapy, as in external radiotherapy, image-guidance plays an important role. For GYN treatments it is standard to acquire at least CT images and preferably MR images prior to each treatment and to calculate the dose of the day on each set of images. Then, the dose to the target and to the organs at risk (OAR) is calculated with worst case scenario from I...

MIND Demons for MR-to-CT deformable image registration in image-guided spine surgery

PURPOSE Localization of target anatomy and critical structures defined in preoperative MR images can be achieved by means of multi-modality deformable registration to intraoperative CT. We propose a symmetric diffeomorphic deformable registration algorithm incorporating a modality independent neighborhood descriptor (MIND) and a robust Huber metric for MR-to-CT registration. METHOD The method...

Simulation of four-dimensional CT images from deformable registration between inhale and exhale breath-hold CT scans.

PURPOSE We propose to simulate an artificial four-dimensional (4-D) CT image of the thorax during breathing. It is performed by deformable registration of two CT scans acquired at inhale and exhale breath-hold. MATERIALS AND METHODS Breath-hold images were acquired with the ABC (Active Breathing Coordinator) system. Dense deformable registrations were performed. The method was a minimization ...

Statistical Atlases of Bone Anatomy: Construction, Iterative Improvement and Validation

We present an iterative bootstrapping framework to create and analyze statistical atlases of bony anatomy such as the human pelvis from a large collection of CT data sets. We create an initial tetrahedral mesh representation of the target anatomy and use deformable intensity-based registration to create an initial atlas. This atlas is used as prior information to assist in deformable registrati...
